Myrothamnus flabellifolius
Resurrection Plant or Vukwabafile
Myrothamnus flabellifolius is a member of a group of plants collectively known as resurrection plants for their ability to fully recover after appearing to be dead for months, during periods of extended drought. These resurrection plants are found in a vast area stretching from Namibia, through Botswana, to Zimbabwe and the northern parts of South Africa. The plant grows between rocky outcrops with very shallow soils and for approximately half of the year it exists in a dehydrated quiescent state.
African natives commonly smoked the leaves of Myrothamnus flabellifolius for its pain-killing properties, often combined with tobacco or taken as a snuff known as "vukwabafile".
Our Myrothamnus flabellifolius is harvested in Northern South Africa.
